Whatever happened to "Bob-a-Job" week? -  we sometimes hear people ask. Well aside from minimum wage and safeguarding challenges with the old approach, the new version, called Scout Community Week, gives the same opportunity for Scouting to benefit the local community, but with a teamwork feel added in.

Last year we had a great time sprucing up Porters Park with beavers, cubs and scouts investing lots of elbow grease in making the place look nice.

This year we are going to do something different. We are going to partner with FEED, a fantastic food bank programme in St Albans, to collect groceries for people in financial difficulties. We are going to hold a simple barbecue at the hut from 6pm to 8.30pm on Wednesday 4 June, in place of normal section meetings that week. We want  beavers, cubs and scouts to bring along a few small items of groceries (see below)  to contribute to what we hope will be a welcome collection for FEED to distribute. 


A representative from the programme will give a small presentation/activity for 10 minutes at 7pm, and our section leaders are providing age-oriented activities at various points through the evening. Parents are very welcome to linger on dropping or to arrive early for pick up and to participate in the BBQ and general community chat. Donations for the burgers and soft drinks we are providing will go to FEED (the cost of the food and drink is itself a donation we have received for this event, so every penny you give will go to FEED).

What types of groceries are most appreciated?

  • Coffee/tea, sugar, longlife milk, fruit juice/squash 
  • Tinned meat/hot dogs/pies/fish/vegetables 
  • Rice, pasta/noodles, cooking sauces 
  • Tinned puddings/custard, jam/spreads 
  • Cereals/cereal bars, biscuits, parbaked bread 
  • Shower gel, shampoo, deodorant, shaving foam/razors, toilet rolls 
  • Washing up liquid/washing powder 
  • Nappies sizes: 2, 4+, 5 & 6 plus baby wipes

Beavers, cubs, scouts and parents are welcome to stay for as long or as short a time as they like between 6 and 8.30, but it would be really good if everyone could be there at 7. Full uniform as usual please.
